Resolution of Vertigo, Neck Pain & Headaches Following Chiropractic Care: A Case Study & Review of the Literature

Objective: The goal of this study is to highlight the benefits of pairing chiropractic with functional neurological care in the management of vertigo, along with additional complaints of neck pain and headaches following a whiplash injury.

Clinical Features: A 44-year-old female patient presented to a chiropractic clinic with a three-year history of dizziness, neck pain, and headaches, which began immediately after a motor vehicle accident. The clinical impression included vertebral subluxations, vertigo, facet syndrome with ligament sprain and tendon strain of the cervical soft tissue, as well as subsequent cervicogenic headaches.

Interventions and Outcomes: The interventions utilized in this case included Activator Method adjusting when and where indicated, vestibular rehabilitative maneuvers, gaze stability exercises, optokinetic activation, as well as stimulation of the right cerebellar-left cortical neuraxis. As an outcome of these interventions, the patient’s symptoms markedly decreased, including the frequency and duration of her vertigo with a significant improvement in balance measurements, in addition to the decrease in severity of her neck pain and headaches.

Conclusion: The combination of chiropractic care with functional neurological applications proved to be a clinically valid and effective approach to the management of this patient who experienced resolution of vertigo and other whiplash-associated symptoms.
